Yes. Montana requires both new and renewing notary applicants to complete at least 4 hours of approved notary education and take and pass the Montana Notary Examination before applying.

This training is for both new applicants and renewing notaries. The Montana Secretary of State’s approved education process applies to each group, with renewing notaries completing the required education before renewal and new notaries completing training within 12 months of submitting their application.

Yes. Montana requires applicants to pass the Montana Notary Exam. The exam must be passed no more than six months before you submit your application, and a score of 80% is considered passing. If an applicant does not pass after three attempts, there is a three-month waiting period before trying again.

Yes. After completing the training course, you receive a State Approved Notary Public Association Certificate of Completion. Montana instructs applicants to save an electronic copy because it must be uploaded with the online notary application.

No. Completing the course is only one step. To become a Montana notary, you must also pass the exam, obtain a $25,000 surety bond, file your application through the Secretary of State’s online portal, pay the $25 application fee, and receive your commission. After you are commissioned, you must obtain an official seal/stamp, and Montana also requires a journal as part of a notary’s tools of the trade.
