Notary commissions in Indiana are valid for eight years. The Secretary of State oversees appointments, maintains records, and administers the required online education and exam. Notaries in Indiana are authorized to perform acknowledgments, jurats, oaths, and affirmations.

Once your application, criminal history report, bond, and training are submitted through INBiz, processing usually takes a few business days. Commissions are issued after verification and exam completion.
To qualify, applicants must:
Be at least 18 years old
Be a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident
Be a legal resident of Indiana or primarily employed in the state
Have no disqualifying criminal convictions
Be able to read and write in English
Provide a sample signature that matches the one used on notarized documents
All applicants, both new and renewing, must complete the state’s mandatory online notary education course and pass the exam with a score of at least 80%.
Applicants must complete their submission online through the INBiz portal, including:
Completed notary application
$75 application fee
Limited criminal history report
$25,000 surety bond
Sample signature
Proof of course completion and exam passing score
Once approved, notaries will receive their commission certificate. At that point, you must purchase:
Notary Seal or Stamp – An official notary stamp or embosser that meets Indiana’s requirements
Notary Journal – A notary journal to track notarizations (recommended but not required)
Notaries must complete three continuing education courses during their eight-year commission. Each course must be completed every two years and costs approximately $50. Failing to complete these will result in commission expiration.
To apply as a Remote Online Notary (RON), you must:
Hold an active Indiana notary commission with at least 90 days remaining
Be up to date with your continuing education
Submit an application through INBiz
Pay a $100 fee
Complete RON training and pass a separate exam
To renew your notary commission at the end of your eight-year term:
Complete the state-required notary course and exam again
Submit a renewal application with updated signature sample and bond
Pay the $75 renewal fee
Ensure you’ve completed required continuing education
Becoming a Notary Public in Indiana involves completing education, passing the exam, bonding, submitting an application through INBiz, and fulfilling ongoing education requirements.
