Meet Iowa Eligibility Requirements

To qualify as a notary in Iowa, you must be at least 18 years old, be a U.S. citizen or legal resident, reside in Iowa or have a principal place of business in the state, and have no felony convictions yet.

Submit Your Iowa Application and Fee

File the “Application for Commission as Notary Public” via the Fast Track Filing System (or by mail), include the $30 application fee, and provide any required supporting information.

Purchase Your Notary Stamp

Obtain an official Iowa notary seal or stamp that shows the state seal, your name as commissioned, your commission number, and expiration date.

Receive Your Commission Certificate

Once the Secretary of State processes your application, you’ll be issued your three‑year commission certificate—check all details and note the expiration date.

Maintain a Notary Journal (Recommended)

While not required, get your notary journal from NPA to record each notarial act and protect both you and your clients.
