Maryland notary commissions are valid for four years, appointed by the Governor following approval by a State Senator.
Notaries can perform acknowledgments, administer oaths, and more. A bond is not required.

Once submitted, applications are typically processed in 4–6 weeks. If your State Senator responds quickly, approval may occur within a few days, but delays of 6–8 weeks are possible depending on references and endorsement timing.
To be a notary in Maryland, you must:
Be at least 18 years old
Be of good moral character and integrity
Live or work in Maryland
Read and write English
Have never had a notary commission revoked
Provide three character references (not family or employers)
All new and renewing applicants must complete a state-approved notary education course and pass the required exam. The exam typically includes 20 questions and requires a passing score of 80%.

Upload your certificates and pay the $25 fee.
The application will be forwarded to your State Senator for endorsement.
After approval, you’ll receive notification via email. You must appear at the Clerk of the Circuit Court within 30 days, present a valid ID, pay the $11 fee, and take your oath of office.
Once you take the oath, you are officially commissioned. You’ll then need to purchase:
A notary seal or stamp (rubber or embosser) that includes your name, the words “Notary Public,” your county, and the state of Maryland
A notary journal with numbered pages, required for documenting notarial acts. Journals must be retained for at least 10 years.
Maryland notary commissions must be renewed every four years. The renewal process includes:
Completing the required training and exam again
Submitting a new online application with updated references
Paying the $25 application fee
Taking the oath of office again and paying the $11 court fee
You may renew 60 days before your current commission expires or up to 30 days after.
