Meet Nebraska Notary Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be at least 19 years old, a U.S. citizen or legal resident, and a resident of Nebraska or a bordering state with a place of work in Nebraska. Individuals with felony convictions are not eligible.

Complete the Nebraska Notary Public Application

Obtain and complete the notary application from the Nebraska Secretary of State’s website.

Take the Nebraska Notary Exam

Nebraska requires new notary applicants to pass a notary exam administered by the Secretary of State, covering notary laws and best practices.

Obtain a $15,000 Surety Bond

Purchase a $15,000 surety bond from an insurance or bonding company. The bond must be valid for the four-year commission term.

Submit the Application, Bond, and Fee

Mail the completed application, proof of passing the exam, the $15,000 surety bond, and the $30 filing fee to the Nebraska Secretary of State.

Receive Your Notary Commission Certificate

Once approved, you will receive your official notary commission certificate.

Purchase a Notary Seal or Stamp

Nebraska requires notaries to use a seal or stamp that includes their name, “Notary Public,” “State of Nebraska,” and commission expiration date.

Keep a Notary Journal (Recommended)

Although not required, maintaining a notary journal is strongly recommended for tracking notarizations and ensuring legal protection.
