Take the NPA New Jersey Notary Course (supplemental)

Complete the course and download your Certificate of Completion. This supplemental course helps build your knowledge of New Jersey notary laws, procedures, and best practices. Initial non-attorney applicants must separately complete a six-hour approved course and pass the required exam.

Meet the Eligibility Requirements

Confirm you qualify to be commissioned: you must be at least 18, be a legal resident of New Jersey or have a place of employment or practice in New Jersey, and not be disqualified from receiving a commission. Nonresidents may qualify if they maintain or regularly work from a New Jersey office or employment location.

Submit Your Application and Fee

Apply electronically through the State Treasurer’s online system and pay the $25 non-refundable application fee. Your application must be endorsed by a member of the Legislature, and initial non-attorney applicants must complete the required education and examination steps before moving through the full commissioning process.

Take Your Oath and Finalize Your Commission

If your application is accepted, follow the commissioning instructions you receive. Within three months of receiving your commission, you must take and subscribe your oath before the appropriate county clerk, who will complete the qualification process and transmit the required information to the State Treasurer.

Purchase Required Notary Supplies

Obtain a compliant New Jersey notary stamp that includes your name, the title “Notary Public, State of New Jersey,” and your commission expiration date. You must also maintain a journal of all notarial acts performed, using either a permanent bound journal or a compliant electronic journal, and retain those records as required.
