Meet Rhode Island Notary Eligibility Requirements

To become a notary in Rhode Island, you must meet the state's basic eligibility criteria. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, reside in Rhode Island or have a place of business within the state, and be able to read and write in English. Additionally, individuals with felony convictions involving fraud, dishonesty, or moral turpitude are not eligible to become notaries.

Complete the Rhode Island Notary Public Application

The first formal step in obtaining a notary commission is filling out the Rhode Island Notary Public application. The application can be downloaded from the Rhode Island Secretary of State’s website. Applicants must carefully complete all required sections to ensure accurate processing.

Obtain the Required Endorsements

Rhode Island requires applicants to obtain endorsements from two individuals who are Rhode Island residents. These endorsers must vouch for the applicant’s good character and ability to fulfill notarial duties responsibly. The endorsements must be included with the application submission.

Submit Your Application and Fee

After completing the application and obtaining the required endorsements, applicants must submit the form along with the designated fee to the Rhode Island Secretary of State. This fee covers the processing and issuance of the notary commission. Payment methods and submission instructions can be found on the Secretary of State’s website.

Receive Your Notary Commission Certificate

Once the application is approved, the Rhode Island Secretary of State will issue the applicant’s official Notary Commission Certificate. This document confirms the individual’s authorization to perform notarial acts within the state.

Take the Oath of Office

Before performing any notarial acts, new notaries must take the official Oath of Office. The oath must be administered by a qualified official, such as a judge or other authorized individual, as specified by Rhode Island law. This step finalizes the commission process.

Purchase a Notary Seal and Journal

Rhode Island notaries are required to use a notary seal or stamp on all notarized documents. The seal must include the notary’s name and other required information as mandated by state law. While a notary journal is not required, it is strongly recommended for maintaining an accurate record of all notarial acts performed. Keeping a journal can provide legal protection and serve as evidence of proper notarization practices.
