Meet Vermont Notary Eligibility Requirements

To qualify, you must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen or legal resident, and live or work in Vermont. You must not be disqualified under 26 V.S.A. § 5342, which covers criminal offenses or unprofessional conduct history.

Complete the Vermont Notary Public Application

All applications must be submitted online through the Vermont Secretary of State’s website. You must fully complete all required sections, make required attestations, and pay the non-refundable application fee in full.

Pass the Required Exam

Unless exempt, you must pass a notary exam approved by the Office of Professional Regulation. The exam tests your knowledge of Vermont notary laws, administrative rules, and ethical duties under Chapter 103.

Submit Your Oath of Office

You are required to execute and submit a notarized oath of office as part of your application. Your name and signature on the oath must exactly match what you'll use when performing notarial acts in Vermont.

Receive Your Notary Commission Certificate

Once your application is approved, you will receive your notary commission with an official commission number and expiration date. You may begin performing notarial acts as soon as your commission is active.

Maintain a Notary Journal (Recommended)

While not required, keeping a notary journal is strongly recommended to record notarizations and provide legal protection in case of disputes.

Upon successfully completing the Vermont Notary Training Course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion.

This certificate demonstrates your understanding of Vermont notary laws, procedures, and best practices. While not required or recognized by the State of Vermont, it can enhance your professional credibility and help you stand out to clients, employers, or organizations seeking well-informed notarial services.

This course is completely online and self-paced. Most students complete it in 2 to 4 hours, though you can take as long as you need. Your progress will be saved automatically as you go.

Yes. You’ll receive a Certificate of Completion when you finish the course.

While this certificate is not required by the State of Vermont and does not satisfy any state-approved education or renewal requirements, it may help demonstrate your training to employers or clients.
