Meet Virginia Notary Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen or legal resident, able to read and write in English, and either reside or work in Virginia. Those with felony convictions must have their rights restored.

Complete the Virginia Notary Public Application

Fill out the notary application available on the Virginia Secretary of the Commonwealth’s website. Ensure all required fields are completed accurately.

Pay the Notary Application Fee

Submit the required $45 fee along with your application to the Secretary of the Commonwealth.

Get Approved by the Secretary of the Commonwealth

Once your application is reviewed and approved, you will receive notification to take the next steps.

Take the Oath of Office

Visit the circuit court in your county or city to take your official Oath of Office and receive your notary commission certificate.

Purchase a Notary Seal or Stamp

Virginia law requires notaries to use a seal or stamp that includes their name, “Notary Public,” “Commonwealth of Virginia,” and their commission expiration date.

Keep a Notary Journal (Recommended)

While not required, maintaining a notary journal is highly recommended to record notarizations and provide legal protection in case of disputes.
