Meet District of Columbia Notary Eligibility Requirements

To qualify as a DC Notary Public, you must meet DC’s eligibility standards. Requirements vary by commission type (residential, business, government, or dual) and may depend on DC residency and/or DC employment. You must act impartially and be able to read and understand the notarial certificate you complete.

Complete the DC Notary Public Application (ONCA)

Submit your application to the Office of Notary Commissions and Authentications (ONCA). Use your name exactly as it will appear on notarizations and include all required documentation for your commission type, including employer-related materials for business/government applicants when applicable.

Submit Your Application Fee and Required Documentation

Include the required DC fee and supporting documents with your application. Incomplete submissions may be returned for correction. ONCA will review your materials and issue an approval outcome (approval, denial, or request for corrections).

Receive Your Appointment Notice and Complete the Oath

After approval, you’ll receive an appointment notice with instructions to complete your commissioning steps. You must take the oath and finish the required ONCA process before performing notarial acts.

Purchase Your Notary Seal/Sealer and Required Supplies

Once approved, obtain your required notary supplies, including an official DC seal/sealer and tools to produce a legible impression (such as an inker, if applicable). Your seal must match your commissioned name and required DC elements.

Maintain a Notary Journal (Required in DC)

DC requires a journal of all notarial acts. You may use a bound, numbered paper journal or a tamper-evident electronic journal. Complete entries at the time of each notarization and keep the journal secure and retained as required.

Fully Online & State Aligned

Our Washington D.C. Notary Training Course is delivered entirely online, allowing you to study on your own schedule—anytime, from any device.

You’ll gain essential knowledge and practical guidance to perform traditional notarial acts confidently and in alignment with DC law and ONCA standards. Please note: this course is supplemental and does not replace any official DC commissioning, education, or renewal requirements.
