Steps to Become a Notary Public in California

Take State Approved Course

The first step in becoming a notary is completing the California State Approved Notary Course provided by Notary Public Association to receive your proof of completion certificate.

Pass State Administered Exam

Once you receive your Proof of Completion certificate you will need to pass the state administered exam with a score of 70% or higher. You can take this exam as many times as necessary to pass.

File a Notary Public Application

You must complete and submit an application to the Secretary of State, which includes disclosing any arrests or convictions. You must also submit a 2″ x 2″ color passport photo.

Surety Bond

You must purchase a $15,000 surety bond to protect the public from potential mistakes or misconduct. The bond must be filed with the county clerk’s office in the county where you are located.

Oath of Office

Once you have received your notary commission you must take an oath of office and file it along with your bond in the county clerk’s office within 30 days of the commission being issued.
